Week 6: Same Name
This prompt at first I thought was going to be hard to do mainly because I am the only Daniel in my family on both sides however there is one that came before me - my 2x great grandfather Daniel Fraher.
Daniel "Dan" Fraher was born on November 16th 1852 in Seskinane, Tooraneena, Co. Waterford to Maurice Fraher and Catherine Hickey. He was baptised on November 18th.
On August 4th 1892, he married Mary Walsh of Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny when he was 39 years old. He was a draper in Grattan Square, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford and was a well known figure after purchasing a piece of land now known as Fraher Field to help people start playing hurling (Fraher Field is still used today!) On August 5th 1893, they had a son called Maurice, December 24th 1894 they had a son Edmond (died young) and on August 19th 1896 my great grandmother Catherine Mary was born.
As I mentioned above, he was quite a well known figure, he owned a draper shop which is where he was living in 1901 with his 7 year old son Maurice. He helped finance the start of the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) back in 1884. He was also a very keen hurler as well! (That gene did not pass down to me...)
He also had ties to the IRA (Irish Republican Army) through his son in law Pax Whelan, got an Ancestry hint that I thought was wrong - turns out it was right! I got a hint for a prison (yes, prison!) register for him and confirmed it was him, he spent a while in prison for breaching the peace in 1916 and jailed again in 1925 in Co. Down - due to "an ordeal from which he never recovered" (what actually happened I've yet to find out...)
He had passed away on the 2nd December 1929
I must admit I am very behind on the #52Ancestors challenge but I'm glad I was able to get this post out. Stay tuned (for a good while at the rate I'm going...) for more!
